Human Networks are not Vanity Voting Booths

What will be the true purpose of social networks? It is hard to imagine that social networks will be sustainable in the future as they are now. The true power of these networks lie in connecting people will similar skills and interests to each other. There is no social benefit in a network overrun with puppy pictures and American Bandstand vanity voting. I can tolerate the use these networks for targeted advertising. I might even agree that lurkers be allowed to observe the conversation. However, what needs to happen in order to provide societal benefit is the network needs to connect expertise with interest. The connection needs to be between validated individuals who come with credentials already established or those willing to contribute as they build their credentials among their peers. This is the dilemma and the future of human networks as I see it. Identifying experts, self-promote experience and peer acknowledgement.
