A harbinger of Spring in Northern Virginia is the Cherry Blossom Festival. Today was the opening of the Cherry Blossom Festival in the Tidal Basin of Washington DC. The early morning weather was cool with a slight breeze, but he this did not stop the crowds. Parking was as always difficult to find but the sunny skies, blossoming trees and sign that Spring has began filled everyone’s heart with pleasure and awe.
Nearly three thousand trees around the Tidal Basin were a gift from Japan in 1912 that has brought beauty and splendor to this corner of the District. Crowds were lighter than normal today likely due to the cool weather and the early blooming of the trees. The festival is likely to peak in the next several days and be replaced by beautiful green foliage shortly thereafter.
We had a great time as well. Each of the last four years we have walked around the Tidal Basin taking pictures. A slide show of pictures is available on our website by clicking here.
